The Closest Face of the Divine:
Awakening, humbling, healing

Louis Herman filmed and interviewed in South Africa by Craig Foster and Pippa Erlich, creators of Academy Award-winning My Octopus Teacher. Here he discusses the primal ecstatic experience of the natural world as “the closest face of the divine.” He talks of how contact with the mystery of creation in places of natural beauty awakens, humbles, and heals people; how these experiences fill them with joy and make them more generous, compassionate, and considerate. All our current crises can be traced ultimately to the loss of such primal connections. Accordingly, the emerging cosmology places these experiences at the center of our lives as we search for meaning.
